Teaching Dilemmas FAQ

Q: I just saw a teacher hit a kid in a way that I'm uncomfortable with. What should I do?

A: This gets tricky.

In some cases, it has been deemed legal for teachers to hit kids, the specific precedent seems to be a Tokyo ruling involving a female teacher. The teacher in the case hit the student on the head with an open-hand, and the court ruled that the manner in which she struck was not excessive.

So one thing to consider is whether the incident might be considered reasonable.

BUT if you feel confident that the way the kid got hit was completely unacceptable for a teacher, and you want to take action, there are a few things you can do.

1) report the incident to your tantousha

-if you want to, you can ask them if you can remain anonymous

(follow up: what if my tantousha hits a kid?)

2) if this results in no action, you can call the PAs and let them know. They may be able to have a Board of Ed. member contacted about the manner.
