Departure Checklist

¨ Pay Your Utility Bills –

If the final bills do not arrive before departing, leave sufficient funds for your supervisor to pay the bills on your behalf. Pay your last electricity, gas, and water bills.  These meters can all be read on your last day and the bills can be paid on the spot.

¨ Pay Keitai, Domestic and International Phone Bills –

Cancel services and make arrangements for the final month’s bills.  Some companies charge phone calls two or more months after they are made.  Transfer the bill to payment by credit card or leave sufficient funds to cover the charges.

¨ Pay for and Cancel Internet Connection –

Most Internet service providers will let you complete the final payment and cancellation procedures on-line, but if this is not the case, make sure you file the appropriate paperwork before you leave.  Some companies require a month or more of notice for cancellation.

¨ Leave money in your bank account or with your supervisor to cover unforeseen expenses.

Once all outstanding bills have been deducted or paid, the remaining money can be sent home to you.  Be sure to designate someone who can do this for you and discuss it BEFORE you leave!

¨ Pay for and Cancel/Transfer Newspaper and Magazine Subscriptions

¨ Pay Outstanding Rent

¨ Pay Local Inhabitants Tax (if applicable to you)

¨ Transfer or Close Bank and Post Office Savings Accounts

¨ File a Change of Address Form at the Post Office.

¨ Arrange for a Japanese Tax Representative and File a “Declaration Naming a Person to Administer Tax Affairs” Form at the Tax Office

¨ Leave Contact Information with your Supervisor

¨ Scrub, clean, and disinfect your apartment and remove all personal items!

¨ Make sure to take home your blue pension book and most recent “Statement of Earnings.”
