What to do if you have an accident

If you have a car accident, please safeguard yourself against future possible lawsuit by going directly to the police to report the incident.

In case of a car accident here are 3 simple steps to follow.

1. Make sure everyone is ok. If someone is hurt, obviously the most important thing is to get them to the hospital. For this reason it is a good idea to carry a photocopy of your health insurance card in your wallet with you at all times, just in case you need to prove you have medical insurance in an emergency.

2. Contact the police to make a report of the incident, they will assign a portion of the blame for the accident to each of the parties. Though it might be tempting to settle the matter ‘off the record’ the only way to guarantee that the other person isn’t going to mysteriously come down with severe whiplash after the incident and sue you is to make sure that there is an official record. Because you are unlikely to find a police office with perfect English, it is a good idea to contact your tantousha at this point as well.

3. Report the incident to your insurance company. You should be able to get help with this from your tantousha.
